The Lone Star Flight Museum (LSFM) is now accepting nominations for the 2018 inductees into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. Nominations will be accepted until July 31. The announcement of the selected inductees will be this fall. The induction will occur on May 5, 2018 during LSFM’s annual gala.
The news release says that in order to be inducted, the nominee has to be a “Texan who has made extraordinary contributions to aviation or a Texas aviator who has made an extraordinary contribution to the United States or the world in another field.”
The 2018 Texas Aviation Hall of Fame class will be joining a list of 71 inductees including Former President H. W. Bush, Tex Hill, Bessie Coleman, Howard Hughes and Herb Kelleher.
While the term “Texan” does include candidates born in Texas, the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame also accepts those who have a large portion of their accomplishments in Texas.
There is a similar disclaimer on the term “aviation” with the news release stating that it applies to the following list:
– Building aircraft
– Piloting aircraft
– Maintaining aircraft
– Instructing
– Designing aircraft
– The airline industry
– Soaring and gliders
– Historical research and preservation
– Ballooning
– The space program
– Civilian and military roles
LSFM Board of Directors put together the selection advisory committee made up of 11 distinguished industry experts from all over the nation. The committee includes:
– Members of the Texas Historical Commission
– Editors of aviation magazines
– Museum professionals
– Authors of aviation-related books
– Academicians
– A former Johnson Space Center Director
The LSFM Board of Directors will make the final decision after the selection advisory committee makes its recommendations.
The nomination package must include the candidate or group’s name, a description of his or her life, a description of the candidate’s work and a statement discussing why the candidate deserves to be included in the hall of fame. The nomination must be emailed to tahof@lonestarflight.org by July 31 and the news release says that any nominations made after the deadline will be held for consideration in the future.
